Canadian Lawyers Guild
Volunteer Opportunities

The Legal Observer Program currently needs volunteers for the following:

Trustees are responsible for making strategic and legal decisions for the Legal Observer Program.

Trustees are also responsible for protecting the confidentiality of our client data.

Trustees must be lawyers to claim privilege on behalf of the Legal Observer Program.

Advisors are responsible for setting operational policies for the Guild and require a wide variety of advocacy skills.

Advisors need not be lawyers.

Criminal defence lawyers who wish to volunteer for the Legal Observer Program should choose to be an advisor rather than Trustee to avoid a conflict with accepting referral from clients of the Legal Observer Program.

If clients of the Legal Observer Program (or their protestors) require a legal referral resulting from their participation in a protest that we observed, priority will be given to members of the Protest Bar Roster.

At this time we anticipate a need for lawyers who practice in the following areas:

  • Criminal Law
  • Labour/Employment Law
  • Human Rights Law

Other practice areas may be added to the roster as need arises. Watch this space for announcements.

Protest Bar Roster

The Legal Observer Program requires one member of the Protest Bar to be available on the day of the protest in case our field team requires assistance.

The on-call volunteer will be responsible for representing our field team on the day of the protest.

If our field team does not require legal assistance, the Field Team Rep will be given priority for any other referrals to member of the Protest Bar.
